25000 cases on, Asian Heart Institute continues to be the preferred destination for cardiac surgery in Asia. Mumbai’s Asian Heart Institute has treated patients from 38 countries since its inception in 2002. Led by world's leading cardiac surgeon Dr Ramakanta Panda, the hospital has catapulted India’s image as a quality player in cardiac surgery and other cardiac services and successfully replaced the ‘cheap and affordable’ tag that India had, to "quality treatment at optimum cost". Dr.Panda and the team has incredible 99.6% success rate in bypass surgery is the platinum standard in cardiac surgery across the world. He has repeatedly and successfully operated extremely high risk cardiac patients from all over the world. In 2019, he led his team at Asian Heart Institute to a milestone 25000 cases; 20% of these cases had less than 10% chance of success, and 5% were declared by other surgeons as inoperable.

The hospital today is the place to go for all complex cardiac care, be the patients with most damaged heartwood needs highest quality of care or complex second surgeries or other critical diseases like aortic aneurysms, complex heart valve repair, heart transplants, complex angiography and angioplasties, patient requiring multiple devices like AICDs and pacemaker, cardiac resynchronization therapy, patient needing atrial fibrillation therapy, device closures for septal defects, electrophysiology and RF ablation. The hospital has also introduced enhanced external counter pulsation (EECP) for patients who cannot be operated, or deny surgery. It has proved to be of help in cases with low ejection fraction. For children’s heart surgeries, this is first hospital in Mumbai to provide a dedicated pediatric cardiac care. In 2009, he led the team that successfully operated on the then Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh. This was followed by highly complex surgeries on several such as Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tarun Gogoi, Narasingha Mishra, D Raja, Rajiv Shukla, corporate titans and global diplomats. Numbercrunching Patients from 38 countries have come to Asian Heart Institute for their cardiac surgery or angioplasty. According to the Indian Tourism Statistics, 2018 report, around 22% arrivals from West Asia was for medical purposes, followed by 15.7 per cent from Africa. To make it easier for the medical tourists to visit India, the government has also allowed an e-Medical Visa for the foreign nationals, with which they may undertake medical treatment including treatment under Indian systems of medicine, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. A case in point being Pakistani patient Zafar Ahmed Lali, brother of Ghulam Muhammad Lali(a Pakistani politician, and parliamentarian), aged 57 at the time, was from a very influential family. They were considering Cleveland Clinic for a heart surgery. However eventually, they chose to undergo a critical double surgery at Asian heart institute, as it was closer.

Advantage India Let’s examine the big reasons why India is such a hot favourite for medical tourism.

1. Clearly, there are economic advantages for choosing English-speaking India for ease of communication.

2. The cost is also optimal for certain procedures.Eg; a heart bypass procedure costs roughly $140,000 without any insurance in the US. The same procedure, however, costs only around $7,000 or Rs 3-5 lakh at India’s leading hospitals.

3. Procedures such as hip and knee replacement, face lift, and gastric bypass are more affordable in India, as compared to the west. This is the case, even if you add cost of travel and accommodation. Moreover, these cosmetic procedures are not covered by most insurance providers in Western countries.

4. Leaders in the Indian medical diaspora are acutely aware of the quality perceptions of its visitors; many Indian hospitals that cater to foreign tourists meet the requirements of US health standards like Food and Drug Administration. Leading private healthcare providers in India have already acquired international quality accreditations like JCI and NIAHO.

5. There is considerable demand for procedures which are not covered under insurance in developed countries. Indian hospitals provide treatment in the fields of cardiology, orthopaedics, and even cosmetology at costs which are almost a tenth of the cost for the same procedures in developed countries.

6. India has many top-notch centres for open-heart surgery and paediatric heart surgeries which are equipped with the latest equipment that are on par with these Western countries.

The quality paradigm What has really changed over the years, thanks to premium superspecialty hospitals in India, that quality of medical care has become on par with the best in the world. The profile of patients that Asian Heart institute has been welcoming, are HNIs in their own right. They want the world’s best cardiac treatment, regardless of the price. India is a global hub, for attracting foreign patients for medical treatments. I’d like to believe that this is thanks to the quality of our doctors and the clinical outcomes. In India, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi are top destinations for foreign visitors as per government data. Quality hotels, added tourism opportunities, and high-quality hospital care are the biggest reasons for this trend. Each country outside India also occupies its own niche. Thailand for example, is a popular destination for cosmetic surgery procedures. The country has been positioning itself as a destination for economical holidays and medical treatments for a variety of ailments.

India’s biggest advantage is that is also home to a number of alternative medicine techniques such as Ayurveda, Sidha, Unani, Yoga, Acupuncture and Homeopathy which are very popular among foreigners. Such treatment opportunities give India the edge over its competitors like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and UAE. Facilities at Asian Heart Institute AHI is the highest accredited hospital in India; with gold certificates from JCI (Joint Commission International), NIAHO (National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organisations), ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) and NABH ( National Accreditation Boards for Hospital & Healthcare Providers). In 2009, the exemplary work of Asian Heart Institute’s cardiac team came to the fore, when the team was specially chosen for the then hon’ble Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Sigh’s complex Redo Bypass Surgery and Post – operative care. Asian Heart Institute is equipped with 12 ultra-modern operations theatres, 100 intensive care beds, fully equipped modernized pathology services, radiology, imaging services (CT scan, MRI), blood bank, 24hrs pharmacy services and cardiac ambulance service. The hi-tech cath lab at the hospital for cardiac and vascular interventional procedures- comes with features like unique stent boost, ceiling suspended system gantry, superb image quality, MRC X-Ray tube technology with unique spectral filtration and continuous sensing safety mechanism. The entire design of the cath lab is made patient-centric. The hospital also houses the world’s most sophisticated imaging and diagnostic technologies. Future Planning With countries now treating medical tourism as a truly value adding proposition, not only to their economy but also to patients who travel in or out of the country to avail healthcare/wellness options, medical value travel is becoming an important consideration in the healthcare landscape of many emerging economies. India’s value proposition is compelling; thanks to the right combination of quality and cost efficiency. While issues like sanitation and infrastructure remain a challenge in a developing country like India, there is no doubt at all that Indian doctors have made their mark, worldwide.
